Red Light Therapy Derby: How It Works, Benefits & Where to Get It

How red and near-infrared LED light therapy works, what the evidence says, and how we use professional LED at our Derby skin clinic.

Red light therapy, also called LED light therapy or photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light to support the skin’s natural repair processes. It is gentle, non-invasive and has no downtime, which is why it features in many of our treatments at Neo Elegance Skin Clinic in Derby.

How red light therapy works

Skin cells contain structures that absorb particular wavelengths of light. Red light, at around 630 to 660 nanometres, and near-infrared light, at around 810 to 850 nanometres, are absorbed by the mitochondria, the energy centres of the cell. This can support cellular energy production, which in turn supports repair, collagen production and a calmer inflammatory response.

The results depend on the device. To create a genuine cellular response, light needs the right wavelength, enough power and the right treatment time. Professional clinic devices are built to deliver this consistently.

What the research suggests

Clinical studies on red and near-infrared LED suggest benefits for:

  • The appearance of fine lines and skin firmness
  • Calming redness and supporting recovery after treatments
  • Skin tone and overall radiance

Blue light, at around 415 nanometres, is used separately for breakout-prone skin.

How we use LED in clinic

We use professional LED as part of several treatments, including our HydroCLEANSE Facial, which finishes with blue LED, and our Pigment Correct Microneedling, which includes red and near-infrared LED. After peels and microneedling, LED helps calm the skin and support recovery.

Should I apply anything under LED?

Skin should be clean and free from serums and creams under LED unless a product is specifically designed for use with light. Many serums and active ingredients can block or scatter light, or are not formulated for use under it.

LED at home between clinic visits

A good at-home LED mask can help maintain results between treatments, as long as it uses clinically relevant wavelengths and enough power. Our professional-grade masks, including Lumiderma, are available from neoelegance.co.uk.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is red light therapy safe?

LED light therapy is non-invasive and generally very well tolerated. Eye protection is used during treatment, and it may not suit people with certain conditions or medications that cause light sensitivity, which we check during your skin assessment.

How many LED sessions do I need?

LED works best as a course or as part of regular treatments, because its effects build over time.

Where can I get red light therapy in Derby?

We offer professional LED as part of facials, microneedling and peels at our clinic on Vernon Street, Derby.
