Acne scars are one of the most common reasons clients visit our Derby clinic. The good news is that scarring can be improved significantly with the right treatment plan. The key is understanding which type of scarring you have, because each responds to different treatments.

Acne scars or acne marks?

Many people use the word “scars” for two different things:

  • Post-acne marks are flat pink, red or brown patches left after a spot heals. They sit in the colour of the skin, not its texture, and usually respond well to brightening peels and pigment-focused treatments.
  • Acne scars change the texture of the skin. They form when inflammation damages collagen deep in the skin, leaving indents.

The main types of acne scar

  • Rolling scars: broad, soft-edged dips that give skin an uneven, wavy look.
  • Boxcar scars: wider depressions with sharper edges.
  • Icepick scars: narrow, deep scars that look like small punctures.

Most people have a mix, which is why a personalised plan works better than a single treatment.

Treatments that help

Microneedling

Microneedling is one of the most effective treatments for rolling and boxcar scars. Controlled micro-channels trigger the skin’s repair response and support new collagen, which can gradually soften the appearance of indented scars. Our Acne Microneedling with Resurfacer combines an acid resurfacer with microneedling for a stronger effect on scarring and marks together.

Radiofrequency microneedling

For deeper scarring, radiofrequency microneedling adds controlled heat beneath the surface to further stimulate collagen remodelling.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are excellent for post-acne marks and surface texture, and help keep active breakouts under control, which matters because new breakouts can lead to new scarring.

How many sessions will I need?

Acne scarring improves gradually. Most clients need a course of three to six microneedling sessions, spaced around four to six weeks apart. Collagen continues to build for months after treatment, so results keep improving after your course ends.

Treat active acne first

If you are still breaking out, we focus on calming active acne before treating scars. Microneedling is not carried out over active breakouts. Our BHA Acne Correction Peel can help clear congestion first.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

What is the best treatment for acne scars?

For indented acne scars, microneedling is one of the most effective treatments, often combined with a resurfacer or radiofrequency. For flat post-acne marks, brightening chemical peels work well.

Can acne scars be removed completely?

Most acne scars can be significantly improved, but complete removal is not realistic for every scar. A course of treatments can make scarring much less noticeable.

How much does acne scar treatment cost in Derby?

Our Acne Microneedling with Resurfacer is £150 per session, and a skin consultation is £40.
